No, this was not a sexual addiction (#StopAsianHate)

It is already being spun that it was not a hate crime but a "sex addiction" issue. The sexualization and fetishization of Asian and Asian American women IS racism. Full stop.

Stand with us in solidarity. (NAPAWF)

Who is listening? (#StopAsianHate)

I am at the same time sad and angry.

I was glued to my phone last night when the first reports came in. So disturbing. Yet not at all surprised. The seeds were sown and now the terrible fruit has dropped from the rotten tree.

Patterns reveal themselves. Pay attention. "Chinese virus," "kung flu," "you brought this sickness here," "go back to your country." A microscopic virus now replaced with a recognizable target.

We are not the virus.

Scientists believe the coronavirus originated from bats and somehow jumped to humans. The bat happened to live in Wuhan. But what if it came from a cave in Kentucky? Would eight people (six of whom were Asian women) have been gunned down last night?

I am at the same time sad and angry.

Jason Sudeikis's hoodie is a Covid mood

Who even cares about fashion right now?

I've been asking myself this question almost every day for the past year, particularly on those afternoons when I catch myself in the mirror, still in my pajamas. Homebound and forever wearing the same sweatpants has dulled my desire for style. Maybe it's why Jason Sudeikis's tie-dyed hoodie at the Golden Globes really resonated with me.

I found the whole thing weird but oddly comforting - his rambling but touching speech, Zooming from what looked like a humble-looking living room, that dressed-down sweatshirt (I noticed it was Forward_Space right away because I used to take classes at the studio, which turns out is his sister's).

Awards season pre-Covid was another life. When the Red Carpet was like my Super Bowl. We'd have parties, we would sip champagne, we dished about who-wore-what. This time around, during a global pandemic that has taken over 500,000 lives in the US alone, caring about who-wore-what feels irrelevant. A bit gross, even.

Thank you, Jason, for capturing my Covid mood.

Best dressed at the Golden Globes.

Stop Asian hate

Anti-Asian hate crimes in the US are skyrocketing. Here in New York, hate crimes against Asian Americans have gone up 1900% (!!) since Covid, according to the NYPD. Which is why the department created an Asian Hate Crime Task Force.

Hate crimes have no place in our society. Period. Let's fight this virus. Not each other.
